Unable to logon to citrix. error message: Cannot Connect to the Citrix Presentation Server – Protocol Driver Error

After some Windows updates yesterday on a few Citrix servers. The following KB 2653959 was installed and something strange happen. Users couldn’t login to Citrix and they got the following error.

"<RDP application> Error"
Cannot Connect to the Citrix Presentation Server
Protocol Driver Error

Note: The system was running Windows 2003 server with presentation server 4.5.
To solve this problem. You have to do the following:

  1. You have to remove KB2653956 for Windows Server 2003 x86
  2. After this you have to reboot the server
  3. Request a Hotfix KB958476 for WIndows Server 2003 x86 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/958476)
  4. Install the Hotfix KB958476 for Windos Server 2003 x86
  5. Reboot the server
  6. After the reboot install Hotfix KB2653956 for Windows Server 2003 x86 ( http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=29377)
  7. Reboot the server

When you have done this test with mstsc ( RDP ) if the connection worked again correctly.

  1. When trying to install the HOTFIX i get the following error, the image file update update.exe is valid but is for a machine type other than the current machine” my machine is a windows 2003 server R2 Enterprise edition, 32bit.

    1. You have to look on the Microsoft page if you use the correct update for the correct server, because I used it for a standard windows 2003 server.

This should rank higher on Google, this actually solved my problem despite the tons of “Protocol Driver Error” solution pages. Cheers!
